Contractor Accreditation FAQs
What is the difference between accreditation, membership, and certification?
These are three separate programs that serve different purposes:
- Contractor Accreditation is for companies that meet the requirements of ABAA’s Quality Assurance Program (QAP). Accredited contractors are eligible to bid on and perform work for projects that specify ABAA-accredited contractors.
- Installer Certification is for individuals who have completed ABAA’s certification requirements. An individual may be certified regardless of where they work. Employing a certified installer alone does not make a company accredited.
- Membership is for companies. Member companies receive exclusive benefits, technical resources, discounts, and educational opportunities. Membership alone does not make a company accredited.
How long does it take to get accredited?
The timeline varies depending on how quickly your company completes the accreditation requirements. One of the biggest factors is how soon an installer can attend an ABAA Installer Training Course, complete the certification process, and submit all required documentation. Once all company and installer requirements have been met, ABAA can process your accreditation.
What are the annual accreditation fees?
- $1000 Membership Fee
- $700 QAP Licensing Fee
- $100 Certified Installer Renewal Fee (per installer)
- $75 Registered Installer Renewal Fee (per installer, if applicable)
How do I register a level 1 installer?
If your company is an ABAA accredited contractor, the primary contact can access the level 1 application form in the member portal. Submit this along with the installer’s head shot (no hats/sunglasses, not a copy of another photo, in JPG or PNG format) to the ABAA office: abaa@airbarrier.org.
I have been awarded an ABAA-specified project. How do I report this to your office?
Please notify the ABAA office by emailing abaa@airbarrier.org with your awarded project information.
How do I request an ABAA auditor for my project?
Contact the ABAA office at abaa@airbarrier.org to schedule an audit.
How do I calculate what my project registration and audit fees will be?
Use the ABAA QAP Calculator available on our website to estimate your project registration and audit fees.
Installer Certification FAQs
How do I get certified?
Complete all certification requirements:
- Minimum 3,000 hours of applicable work experience
- Attend an ABAA installer training course
- Achieve min. 80% passing grade on the installer exam
- Submit completed installer certification documents
My installer certification expired several years ago. Can I renew it?
If your certification has been expired for more than five years, you must complete the certification process again.
If your certification expired within the last five years, you may be eligible for reinstatement by paying the applicable reinstatement fee (typically $200–$250, depending on the length of the lapse).
I attended installer training years ago but never completed my certification. Can I still finish it?
An individual has 5 years from the time they attend training to complete their certification in full. This includes accumulating the required hours, passing the installer exam and submitting all completed installer documents. If it is past the 5-year mark, the certification process must start over.
My company employed a certified installer who has since left the company. Can that certification be transferred to another employee?
No. Installer certification belongs to the individual who earned it and cannot be transferred to another employee.
I'm changing employers. Can I keep my installer certification?
Yes. Installer certification belongs to the individual—not the employer. Your certification remains valid when you move to another company.
