DESCRIPTION:Use of combustible building materials in wall assemblies increases the risk of fire in the built environment. The relationship between the weather barrier and NFPA285 compliance is often misunderstood. This course will cover the basics of the NFPA 285 test standard and the building code sections relevant to weather resistive barriers. SUMMARY:BE and the High C’s: Specification Writing with Enclosure Consultants in Perfect Pitch 1.0 CEU/HSW
DESCRIPTION:The 4 C’s—Clear\, Correct\, Concise\, and Complete—form the foundation of effective technical and specification writing. Building Enclosure Consultants (BECs)\, however\, may not be fluent in the language of specifications\, often viewing it as a misunderstood second language. As a result\, the work of specification writing becomes doubly challenging when collaborating with BECs. \nThis session explores the range of building enclosure consulting scopes and processes that directly influence building enclosure specifications\, including Building Enclosure Commissioning (BECx)\, which is rapidly becoming both a high-performance building expectation and a code-driven requirement. To bring this sometimes-awkward working duet into perfect pitch\, specification writers must learn to harmonize with BECs—using the 4 C’s as their common language—to clearly communicate enclosure intent\, responsibilities\, and performance requirements. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nReview the 4 C’s as presented by CSI. Consider additional C’s in the specification writing process. DESCRIPTION:This presentation will identify the many difficult critical transitions on complex building types and will give the tools to better understand the reasoning and sequencing needed to complete the installation in order to prevent constructability issues and potential rework in the field through drawing detailing and correlating construction photos of actual installations and explanations of each condition. \nLearning Objectives: \n\n Identify locations of difficult critical transitions regarding the installation of the air\, vapor\, and moisture barrier through construction drawings and correlating photos of correct and incorrect installations.\nConfidently review drawings and in-place work through an understanding of the detailing needed to be located on the drawings and in the field.\n Learn how to prevent constructability issues during design development and create an action plan for each condition for construction regarding the installation of the air\, vapor\, and moisture barriers.\nApply the understanding of the installation of the air\, vapor\, and moisture barriers concerns to the field during the site observation review.\n\n  \nCorey Zussman\, AIA\, NCARB\, ALA (IL\, IN\, WI)\, QA/QC Vice President\, AECOM Hunt Construction \nAs a forensic architect registered in several states\, Corey Zussman has practiced in the construction industry for more than 30 years. He specializes in the building envelope\, restoration\, preservation\, life safety\, and interior finishes. While working on over 2000 projects\, Corey conducts constructability reviews\, pre-installation meetings\, comprehensive envelope meetings\, and construction observations. He has also become known for providing educational opportunities throughout the industry and has produced more than 200 “lessons learned” papers. Topics include building envelope and life safety concerns\, enabling Corey to proactively address issues during design review\, pre-construction\, and construction. In addition\, he has over 15 industry articles about building envelope\, life safety\, and interior topics. He is also a frequent presenter at local and national conferences and associations with over 60 AIA accredited presentations.
