SUMMARY:LEED v5 BD+C and Building Enclosure Compliance 1.0 CEU/HSW
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines how building enclosure performance requirements have evolved from LEED v4 to LEED v5 through updates to ASHRAE 90.1-2010\, -2019\, and -2022\, and explores the implications of these changes for enclosure design\, moisture management\, indoor air quality\, thermal comfort\, and overall building performance. As enclosure assemblies have become tighter to meet increasingly stringent energy code requirements\, the potential for unintended consequences—including interstitial condensation\, mold growth\, and compromised air barrier continuity—has increased. Understanding these risks is critical to achieving durable\, energy-efficient buildings while maintaining healthy and comfortable indoor environments. The session also examines building enclosure commissioning (BECx) as a risk-mitigation and quality-assurance strategy. Through third-party review and verification of enclosure design and installation\, BECx can help identify and reduce issues related to water intrusion\, thermal bridging\, air leakage\, and indoor environmental quality. By connecting evolving energy-code requirements and enclosure commissioning practices to LEED v5 BD+C prerequisites and credits\, participants will gain a clearer understanding of how informed design\, coordination\, and documentation decisions can support building performance\, durability\, occupant well-being\, and successful green building certification. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe the structure of LEED v5 BD+C\, including the Energy and Atmosphere prerequisites and credits\, and identify where building enclosure performance most directly influences certification outcomes.\nCompare the building envelope provisions of ASHRAE 90.1-2010\, -2019\, and -2022\, and explain how the resulting changes impact building enclosure design and construction for LEED v5 BD+C projects compared to prior versions of the rating system.\n Identify the LEED v5 BD+C requirements and optional credit paths for Building Enclosure Commissioning\, distinguish the fundamental from enhanced BECx scope.\nExplain the three types of field-testing that LEED v5 BD+C requires under the EAc5 Enhanced Commissioning credit and which referenced documents can be adopted for compliance.\n\nRegister Now \nDaniel Overbey\, AIA\, LEED Fellow\, WELL AP Director of Sustainability\, Associate Principal\, Browning Day \nDaniel Overbey\, AIA\, NCARB\, LEED Fellow\, LEED AP (BD+C\, ID+C\, O+M)\, WELL AP\, EcoDistricts AP\, Fitwel Ambassador\, is an Associate Principal and Director of Sustainability for Indiana-based Browning Day and an Associate Professor of Architecture at Ball State University’s R. Wayne Estopinal College of Architecture and Planning. His work focuses on high-performance and zero net energy/zero net carbon building design and construction\, environmental systems research\, energy/life cycle assessment modeling\, and resilient design. Daniel has over twenty years of experience in research\, teaching\, and practice.
