SUMMARY:BEC Greater Detroit Presents ABAA Day Detroit 2026
DESCRIPTION:Earn up to 4.5 LU/HSW \nRegister Today \n\nProgram Agenda\n8:30-8:45AM Check-in\, Continental Breakfast\, Sponsor Displays & Networking \n8:45-9:00AM Opening Remarks \n9:00-10:00AM\nAirtightness Testing Goes Extreme 1.0 LU/HSW\nPamela Jergenson\, FCSI\, CCS\, CxA\, CABS\, Technical Director\, Building Science Solutions\, Intertek\nIncomplete or unclear drawings often lead to performance issues in the field. This session reviews building science fundamentals and shows how to improve detail clarity at foundations\, roofs\, windows\, penetrations\, and material transitions to support durable\, energy-efficient enclosures. \n10:00-10:30AM Morning Break\, Sponsor Displays \n10:30-11:30AM\nAdventures in Hygrothermal Modeling 1.0 LU/HSW\nKeith Simon\, FAIA\, Vice President\, Design Phase Services\, Salas O’Brien\nThis session demonstrates how hygrothermal modeling replaces rules of thumb with data-driven insights. Through case studies\, it examines when perm ratings matter\, how roof membrane color and cool roofing affect performance\, and when high-temperature membranes are truly required for durability. \n11:30AM-1:00PM Lunch Break\, Sponsor Displays \n1:00-2:00PM\nSelf-Adhered Membrane Applications: What Does It Really Mean to Stick? 1.0 LU/HSW\nCody Shelner\, PE\, Head of Marketing\, Air & Waterproofing\, tesa Air & Waterproofing\nWhile self-adhered membranes are popular for their ease of use\, performance depends on more than peel adhesion. This presentation reviews the forces these systems must resist—wind\, stack effect\, and pressurization—and explains why comprehensive performance testing is essential for long-term durability. \n2:00-2:30PM Afternoon Break\, Sponsor Displays \n2:30-4:00PM\nUnderstanding Difficult Critical Transitions of Air\, Vapor\, and Moisture Barriers 1.5 LU/HSW\nCorey Zussman\, AIA\, NCARB\, CABS\, QA/QC Vice President\, AECOM Hunt Construction\nThis presentation identifies challenging critical transitions in complex building types and provides tools to understand proper sequencing and detailing. Using construction drawings and real-world installation photos\, it highlights strategies to prevent constructability issues and costly rework in the field. \n4:00PM Closing Remarks \n\nRegistration Fee: $50 \nVenue:\nUniversity of Detroit Mercy\nStudent Union Building\nBallroom (2nd Floor)

SUMMARY:Schwab/ABAA Virtual Air Barrier Installation & Quality Control Fundamentals Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Melissa Payne\, BECxP\, CxA-BE\, CDT \nCEU: 1 AIA LU/HSW \nRegister Here \nJoin us for an informative presentation that emphasizes the importance of proper air barrier application in enhancing building performance. Properly installed air barriers are critical in preventing air leakage\, which can lead to energy inefficiencies\, moisture issues\, and compromised indoor air quality. We will delve into best practices for air barrier application\, highlighting the techniques that ensure continuity and effectiveness. Attendees will learn about common challenges faced during installation and the vital role of quality control in maintaining the integrity of the air barrier system. Through real-world project photo’s\, we’ll illustrate key application requirements for a variety of air barrier materials and exactly what to look for when performing quality control and site-testing. \n Learning Objectives: \n\nIdentify and demonstrate the essential techniques for proper air barrier installation\, ensuring continuity and effectiveness in various building applications.\nIdentify common pitfalls and obstacles in air barrier application\, and learn strategies to overcome these challenges to maintain optimal performance.\nArticulate the importance of quality control processes during installation\, and learn specific inspection methods and testing protocols to ensure air barrier integrity.\nAnalyze real-world case studies to distinguish between effective and ineffective air barrier installations\, understanding the long-term consequences of proper application and maintenance.

SUMMARY:Ron Blank/ABAA Blown Away: Unmasking the Secrets of Whole Building Airtightness Testing
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Denali Jones\, P.E.\, ABAA \nCEU: 1 AIA LU/HSW\, 1 AAA\, 1 AIBD\, 1 BOMI\, 1 FBPE\, 1 ICC\, 1 OAA\, 1 SAA \nRegister Here \nWhole building airtightness testing has been a code compliance option in the International Energy Conservation Code and ASHRAE 90.1 for some time. That compliance option was rarely used and only became mandatory as part of building owners’ requirements or a specific state or jurisdictional requirement that was limited to one or two states. As we moved towards Net Zero\, building codes “tightened” up\, and it is expected this will become a test that is mandatory on a more countrywide basis. It seems that time has arrived\, with many states now requiring mandatory whole building airtightness testing. As we move toward those requirements\, it is important to understand the latest in test methods\, current and projected code requirements\, how to specify the test properly\, coordination needed with the construction team\, and what type of pre-qualifications exist that you can rely upon. \n Learning Objectives: \n\nIdentify the current building code requirements on both the national and local levels\, plus the must-know details of eco-friendly building programs that are trending right now.\nArticulate what the airtightness test provides and how those results can be used to improve the building enclosure.\nDefine the differences among the various test methods available as code or specification options.\nReview guide specification sample language and typical pitfalls in current specifications.\nIdentify credentialing programs that can help you find pre-qualifications of testing personnel for large buildings.
