Member Spotlight: Jeff Stickney
I have worked for Smalley and Company since 1986. I became a Market Specialist for Building Envelope products in 2010. Since then, I have served as the President of the Denver CSI Chapter. I have received certifications for CDT (Construction Document Technologist), CCPR (Certified Construction Product Representative), CPHT (Certified Passive House Trades person), CABS (Certified Air Barrier Specialist-ABAA), and REWO (Registered Exterior Wall Observer). I have my MBA from the University of Phoenix.
When did you earn your Certified Air Barrier Specialist (CABS) certification from the Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA)?
A: September, 2021
What inspired you to pursue the CABS program with ABAA?
A: As a distributor providing technical support for our customers in the field, I wanted to earn the CABS certification to improve my building science knowledge.

How has the CABS certification impacted your career or professional development?
A. CABS certification has allowed me to provide site observations for the air barrier products we support along with the ability to work with designers to establish warrantable details.
What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered in air barrier field and how as your certification helped you address them?
A. Complex details involving multiple manufacturers are challenging when trying to achieve a “warrantable” detail.
What advice would you give to someone considering pursuing the CABS certification with ABAA?
A. The CABS certification requires dedicated time each week to read and understand the resource material. Technical Bulletins on the ABAA website are extremely helpful in preparing for the CABS exam.
In your opinion, what are the most crucial aspects of effective air barrier system design and installation?
A. In doing site observations, the most crucial areas for a successful air barrier installation are the transition details at the roof to wall; waterproofing to wall; and windows.
Any additional insights about your certification experience or working in the air barrier industry?
A. As soon as you think you have seen it all… the next challenge proves you have not!
