What was the path to your career — how and why did you pursue a profession as a Chemist and Architectural Representative?

A: Started out as a Research Chemist in solid fuel rocket boosters and sealants for building exteriors. Gradually migrated through R&D into built-up roofing & single ply roofing to moving into the entire building exterior including as a manufacturer of my own ABAA Evaluated air barrier assemblies.

Division 7 Solutions Inc. has been operating for 33 years and is now operating as a Materials Advisory firm for Design Professionals.

Is there anything that you believe everyone in this industry should be working towards?

A: To work together with our membership, industry and trade to be the recognized voice for air barrier knowledge and quality assurance.

What role have peers, mentors, or advisors played in your career?

A: I’ve had phenomenal mentors along the way. Many of them published scientists, independent business owners and distinguished military personnel.

What led you to become an ABAA member?

A: I saw this technology back in 1999 and knew it was going to be a forefront science for the future of better buildings. It had all the right bases covered.

Are you involved in any ABAA committees? Do you have any ABAA certifications?

A:

First, very proud to have acquired the first CABS (Certified Air Barrier Specialist) designation.

I currently serve on the Marketing and Contractor Committees and as ABAA’s Executive Advisor.

I have had the honor of being a Board Director, Vice Chairperson (2x) and Chairman of ABAA (3x) with a few years as an Executive Committee member.

How long have you been in the industry?

A: Since 1999.

What major changes have you seen?

A: Training and Certification of Contractors, CABS and fully 3rd party evaluated materials and assemblies. I don’t think many other industries have ever policed themselves this well.

What traits or skills do you think are necessary to be able to succeed in your industry?

A: Extensive reading, drive, and effort.

“In business, be humble, be respectful, and be the hardest worker in the room.” Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson

Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in your field?

A: Read, study and then read some more. Make very sure that you understand the history and evolution of this industry.

How much demand do you think there is for people in your profession?

A: There is a huge demand for actual Architectural Reps. It is one of the reasons that I enjoy teaching at the “Spec Shaman” architectural representative training school run by Ron Blank & Assoc.

What do you think the industry will look like in five or ten year’s time?

A: This industry will advance and morph in to the inclusion of all six sides of the building.
