What was the path to your career — how and why did you pursue a profession as a Building Envelope Consultant?

A: After 5 years in the Marine Corps, I was offered a job at SBEC as a hand then eventually a junior consultant. I welcomed the change of pace and have been enjoying being a part of the industry ever since.

Is there anything that you believe everyone in this industry should be working towards?

A: Hands down energy conservation. Weather its working towards more efficient HVAC systems, new WRB products or just expanding contractors, builders and installers knowledge base. I think we are already heading in the correct direction.

What role have peers, mentors, or advisors played in your career?

A: There have been several mentors along my path, each one providing different insight and knowledge. The advice and teachings have been invaluable. There is no way I’d be where I am today without Jerry Jones, Paul Beavers and many others.

What led you to become an ABAA member?

A: SBEC has been ABAA Auditor certified for years prior to my coming on board. Becoming an ABAA Auditor was a requirement of my employment because SBEC knows the value ABAA brings to the industry and being a part of that is a priority for our company.

Are you involved in any ABAA committees? Do you have any ABAA certifications?

A: I am. I’m a part of the QAP (Quality Assurance Program) committee and I am also on the Board of Directors for ABAA.

How long have you been in the industry?

A: 6 years.

What major changes have you seen?

A: My company has been doing Building Enclosure Tests and consulting for the US military for over 10 years and there have been major technological advances in the hardware and software testing equipment and products. I have also seen the building enclosure testing making significant headway in the commercial and residential sectors. That’s probably what I am most excited about.

What traits or skills do you think are necessary to be able to succeed in your industry?

A: Adaptability. In an industry that is changing as fast as the air barrier industry is, it’s important to be able to adapt. Secondly, don’t be greedy with your knowledge. We are all on the same team. Third, never stop learning.

Do you have any advice for anyone starting out in your field?

A: Be hungry to learn, find mentors and be enthusiastic. We are on the cutting edge of the building energy efficiency movement! It’s a very exciting time!

How much demand do you think there is for people in your profession?

A: As the industry grows, new specifications come along and mandates for certain certifications continues to increase I think there is a massive demand that will continue to grow.

What do you think the industry will look like in five or ten year’s time?

A: I think that ABAA has and will continue to lead the industry in a positive direction. I see whole building air tightness tests becoming more and more mainstream and even mandated on all new construction as well as major remodels.

Short answer: Continued growth.
