ABAA’s training and certification programs provide a means to ensure applicators possess the necessary skills and knowledge to produce quality air barrier installations. Certification sets you apart from the competition and identifies you as a professional.

Once an installer completes the ABAA training program, he/she should have the ability to:

  • Read and understand plans and specifications
  • Select the proper material for the application
  • Determine the proper substrate conditions
  • Proper application of the material
  • Ensure the compatibility of components
  • Ensure continuity over joints and junctions
  • Undertake the required testing
  • Accurately complete documentation
  • Complete the installation in a safe manner

Who Should Apply?

While all industry members are encouraged to participate in training, certification will be granted upon completion of the course only to those participants who are able to demonstrate both a working knowledge of air barrier installation practices and documented practical experience, or an acceptable combination of related practical trade experience in related products in commercial construction. Participants must also possess a solid understanding of construction and building components. New entrants to the industry are also welcome to attend this course and participate in ABAA's apprentice program.

Courses Available from ABAA for Air Barrier Installers

Self-Adhered & Fluid Applied Installer Training Course

The Self Adhered and Fluid Applied installer training course consists of both theory and practical instruction.

The classroom portion of training emphasizes understanding the need for and function of an air barrier assembly, the ability to select and install the correct material in SA and FL applications, the ability to confirm proper installation through on-sit testing and the documentation required throughout the air barrier installation process. The classroom is divided into three main modules. The first, principles and theory provides an introduction to air barriers, building science, codes and standards as well as installer ethics and responsibilities. The second module focuses on procedure, teaching participants about testing and audits and proper documentation and reporting. The final module of the classroom section is an overview of building enclosure construction. Participants will learn about material selection, application technology, substrate conditions and the continuity/compatibility of components.

The practical portion of the training module is carried out on a job site, or on a mock-up where an authorized ABAA representative will instruct the installer and observe the application of the air barrier assembly.

Spray Polyurethane Foam Installer Training Course

The Spray Polyurethane Foam installer training course consists of both theory and practical instruction.

Certification

Please note that training is only one component of the certification process. Installers are required to have a minimum 3000 Hours of experience in air barrier applications or related fields and provide supporting documentation. Installers are also required to attend training and achieve a passing average grade of 80%, complete all required paperwork, submit certification payments as well as pass an on-site skill assessment. Certification is granted by application method by training course complete. Certification is non-transferable.

The Air Barrier Association of America training courses provide participants with the required skill sets to deal with all manner of air barrier assemblies. In addition, employing a certified installer and a trained quality assurance program administrator are requirements for all ABAA accredited contractors. Benefits of installer training include:

Courses Available from ABAA for Air Barrier Contractors

Quality Assurance Program Administrator Training Course

The Quality Assurance Program Administrator course is a 3 hour course generally held in the evening. Participants study an introduction to air barriers, materials versus systems, building code requirements, site installation realities and installer testing requirements. The administrator course also delivers an overview of the ABAA Quality Assurance Program, contractor and installer obligations, project reporting as well as related documentation.

What do you get?

Participants who successfully complete the Air Barrier Installer course and obtain certified installer status in a given application will be issued a certificate, Air Barrier Installer photo identification card for that given application and manual updates. Certified installers are also included in the ABAA national directory.

Related Fields:

ABAA accepts related experience in spray-applied waterproofing, hours in sheet membrane waterproofing, self-adhered membrane roofing, torch-applied membrane roofing and in painting. Hours in each category are weighted and reviewed on a case by case basis by the ABAA office.

Affidavit

Installers must sign and return a notarized original copy of the affidavit confirming hours of field experience.

Installer Licensing Agreement

Installers must sign and return the original of the Installer Licensing agreement between the installer and the association outlining the conditions and terms all by which all certified installers must abide.

Photo Identification

Installers are required to submit a color digital photograph of themselves to be used for their individual photo identification card.
